Black and White and Everything In-Between

2011, University of Oslo

MDF sculptures and a book work

A book work presented in two sculptures. The book tells the story of the artist’s journey to Eritrea, Africa. She was intending to photograph the modernist architecture of Asmara, but the project got tangled up in complex political questions regarding the ruling regime and Norway’s role in the young state’s development. Basing the project on found documents and her own photographs, Marte Johnslien draws lines between modernist architecture, printed propaganda and international politics.

The book Black and White and Everything In-Between was printed in 150 copies.
